Pipes can burst for a variety of reasons. In colder sections of the Country, freezing temperatures, along with a loss of electricity or the lack of adequate insulation around the water pipes could mean disaster.

Fortunately here in Las Vegas, our warm temperatures year around would make it an extremely unlikely occurrence. Just because our pipes don't freeze, does not mean we get to avoid all pipe bursts. Here are a few examples of other causes of pipe bursts:

  • Corrosion
  • High Water Pressure
  • Accidental Damage
  • Movement and Weakening

Corrosion

Pipes do break down over time. Older pipes that have exposed to a variety of minerals, chemicals and other elements eventually eat away the pipes and also weaken the connecting joints.

Corrosion leaks may start off very small and even unnoticed behind walls and under concrete slabs, but eventually it could lead to a burst pipe as the water pressure eventually builds.

High Water Pressure

High water pressure by itself may not cause a problem, but when the pressure is more than it should be is met with weakened pipes, that is a recipe for disaster. When that pipe bursts, water damage could be massive and worse due to the high water pressure pushing gallons of water in seconds.

Accidental Damage

Damage to water pipes can happen in a variety of ways by accident. From digging up a water line to driving screws in the wall, plastic and copper pipes are not that strong and can be easily damaged by banging into them with heavy force or sharp objects.

Usually, water pipes are out of the way and people know to avoid damaging them, however some DIY weekend warriors will attempt all kinds of projects that could run them into trouble.

Movement and Weakening

At some point you have probably heard some clanging and banging of pipes, especially when water is turned on and off. Water hammer happens when water is moving fast through a pipe and the process of shutting off the water makes it stop so violently that the pipes bang and vibrate. Over time this movement weakens the pipes and joints. If your water pressure is too high, this can make the problem worse.

What do you do if your pipes burst and water is damaging your home?

Hopefully you know where your shut off valve is. Your water supply should have a single point of entry where your shut off valve can be used to stop all water from coming into your home.

Of course if you get a burst water pipe outside your home before your shut off valve, that will not help you stop the leak. Call your water company to report water main breaks and fire hydrant leaks.

At LV Restoration & Plumbing, we provide a one -stop - shop experience to save you the hassle of dealing with multiple contractors.
